How do you maintain your garden as fresh and gorgeous as the owner?

Does it seem like your lawn is always overgrown, weeds are taking over and those shrubs are in constant need of pruning? It doesn’t have to be this way! There are little things you can do to ensure your garden always looks good, saving you from doing all the difficult, laborious work at once. Make a few little changes to your gardening habits and you’ll have more time to relax and enjoy your backyard.

1. Just a trim

Pruning your plants regularly will prevent them from growing out of control and save you having to do annual battle. Trimming often means you only have to nip off the tips of new growth, so you won’t need to get the rake out and deal with a mass of green waste. Instead, you can just let it land on the ground, where it will turn into mulch.
Tip: If you’re trimming large foliage plants, it’s best not to use shears because they tend to cut leaves in half. The remaining leaf stubs will then brown off, leaving your plant looking a little worse for wear. You’ll get better results if you use secateurs.

2. Let it flow

Cleaning your irrigation system at least twice a year will ensure your plants get the best quality water. It removes material that has made it past the filter and settled in the lines. Simply unscrew the drip or spray outlets, flush the line, then clean the filter.
Tip: To make your own simple irrigation system, connect 20m soaker hoses using a 13mm irrigation connector and ratchet clip. Plug it in, turn upside down and cover with a layer of mulch.

3. Weed ’em out

A constant problem during the growing season, weeds should be dealt with promptly by pulling them out. Or, if necessary, spray thoroughly with a specialised weed killer as soon as they appear and before they set seed.
Tip: An area covered with plants is less likely to get weeds than bare patches of soil, so plant groundcovers or even throw down a couple of vegie seeds or seedlings on the bare spot. You may be able to harvest vegetables, too!

4. Get the dirt

Mulch is the low-maintenance landscaping hero. Spread over the soil after planting, which will hinder weed growth and prevent the soil from drying out too quickly. It also helps keep the soil cool in summer and insulates the ground in winter – the plants will love you for it!
Tip: Use organic mulch such as lucerne or sugarcane. As it breaks down, it will add nutrients to the soil.

5. A clean cut

The best thing you can do for your lawn is to mow high and often. Taking off only the blade tips makes the grass much healthier and denser. Plus, you won’t need to use a catcher – just let the cuttings add organic matter to your lawn.

Tip: Regularly check your mower blades are sharp to make sure they cut cleanly. Dull blades can shred your grass and cause discolouration at the tips, spoiling the look of your lawn.

11. To prevent buttons from becoming loose or undone, dab a little clear nail varnish on the top thread or onto the stem of the thread and leave to dry.

12. To remove pollen from the stamen of flowers, take a piece of sticky tape about five centimetres long, gently press the sticky side to the pollen mark and lift off. Repeat with clean sticky tape as required. Do not try to brush it off.

36. To restore toilet bowls back to their shiny best, clean with old, flat Coke or Pepsi. To dissolve limescale, leave the soda overnight to soak.

37. Use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to clean the tops and creases of Roman blinds.

38. Vacuuming a mattress, particularly along piping and crevices, removes dead skin cells that attract dust mites.

39. Clove oil (sold in chemists for toothaches) kills mould spores. Mix three drops in one litre of water and then use to wipe down areas susceptible to mould.

Bathtub

The citric acid in the grapefruit breaks down the calcium. You can also scrub your bathtub with a lemon to get the same effect. This is a safe and natural method of cleaning the bathtub. It is also cheaper than purchasing chemicals.
Tip: Are there bottles you keep on the ledge of your bathtub that leave a ring of rust, which you have to clean all of the time? Paint the bottom of the bottles with clear nail polish and they’ll no longer leave a residue of rust.

Shower
Calcium deposits and built up soap scum can be a pain to clean in your shower. Try preventing the build up of calcium by spraying your shower with a non-stick cooking spray. Let the spray soak for a few minutes before wiping it away. Note, your shower floor may be slippery after this, so be careful and/or buy a shower mat to stand on.
Tip: Sometimes, rubbing the shower doors with a dryer sheet will also remove water stains and soap scum.
Toilet
This is a fast and easy way to get a clean toilet bowl. Simply let baking soda and vinegar soak in the toilet bowl for at least fifteen minutes. Flush the toilet and it will be clean! This is inexpensive and simple.
Mirrors
There’s a super cool trick to cleaning mirrors that you may or may not have heard of. It’s black tea! The tannic acid in black tea will clean your mirrors. Just brew some black tea, let it cool and use it to wipe your mirrors with a lint-free cloth.
Tip: Are you tired of the mirror fogging up when you’re trying to use it? You can rub soap on your mirror to keep it from fogging up.
Shower Head
The calcium and minerals in water build up inside of shower heads over time. This can clog the shower head and slow down the flow of water. To clean the shower head, fill a plastic bag halfway with vinegar and secure it to the shower head. Make sure the shower head is covered with the vinegar. You can secure it with rubber bands. Leave the bag on the shower head for the entire night and remove in the morning. Your shower head should be as good as new.
Shower curtain
Run Vaseline on your shower curtain rings to keep them gliding easily along the shower curtain rod. They should stop sticking.

WINDOW AND MIRROR CLEANER

  • -in the bathroom, due to moisture and poor ventilation, mold can be a recurring problem. To combat this you can spray straight vinegar or a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water onto the mold prone areas.

5 WAYS TO STRETCH YOUR CLEANING PRODUCTS

1. Don’t automatically fill both dispensers in your dishwasher.
The detergent box recommends it, but it’s better to adjust the amount of detergent to the soil level of the load and the hardness of your water. Start by filling each cup halfway, adding a bit more for extra dirty dishes and hard water. Plus, using too much detergent can leave a filmy residue on your glasses and flatware.
2. Always measure laundry detergent.
I know the numbered lines inside detergent caps are impossible to see, but with today’s 2x and 3x concentrated detergents, a full cap is too large a dose for most loads. Adding more detergent won’t get clothes any cleaner; instead, laundry can still be soapy at the end of the cycle and front-loading washers that are sensitive to excess suds may shut down.
3. Spray the cloth, not the surface.
When cleaning mirrors, polishing furniture, and shining stainless steel appliances, spray the cleaner directly on the rag. Spritzing the surface often wastes product and leaves behind excess cleaner that requires more wiping and extra buffing to remove — who needs that?
4. Choose a foaming bathroom tub and tile cleaner.
These cling to vertical surfaces better than thin sprays do, so you’ll get more muscle from less product. After spraying a small section of tile, use your sponge or cloth to spread it around. Wait a few minutes for the formula to penetrate the soil, then wipe or rinse the surface clean.

Equipment

To make window washing less of a chore, make sure you’re armed with the proper tools. Pros recommend using a good quality squeegee. If you’re determined to make window cleanliness an ongoing priority, consider investing in several sizes. A 12- to 15-inch squeegee will work for the majority of your windows but if you have divided windows, you may need a smaller squeegee as well.
Also on your must have list: a T-bar-style window scrubber. This device looks like a mop and comes with removable sleeves that can be washed when they get dirty.
While you’re gathering supplies, be sure to pick up a bucket that’s large enough to fit your largest squeegee and scrubber, lint-free cloths, sponges, a metal scrubber, ladders, detergent and steel wool.

The basics

Start your beautification efforts indoors and move outside, where the glass is likely grimier. Many pros use just a squirt of dishwashing liquid in half a bucket of cool water. Without stirring up a bunch of bubbles, dip your scrubber into the bucket. Then, scrub your window, moving the scrubber up and down across the entire surface of the window. Use a smaller sponge to get into corners you can’t sufficiently clean with the scrubber.
Next, it’s time to squeegee. Start in an upper corner and pull the squeegee evenly across the window, side to side. At the end of each stroke, wipe the squeegee’s blade with a clean rag. With practice, you’ll be able to angle the squeegee slightly so the water drips downward.
Remove any water remaining on the edges of the glass with a damp – but not wet – chamois, then use a towel to wipe up any water spilled onto the sill or floor. Repeat the process until all your windows are squeaky clean – indoors and out.
